The one standard feature this one doesn't have is dual sim slots. However, it has improved the 2.0 mega pixel camera and added an e-book reader.

In terms of appearance, the i9 looks more like a newer generation phone. It's a good bit sleeker, smaller, and lighter and is the least clunky of all of the offerings until now.

It's also a quad band, or even if you are one of the few people on the 850 MHZ band, you will be just fine with this phone. It's covered by nearly all GSM networks and carriers. There isn't many places, or many networks, that this phone can't go. All of the major names are covered here.

This phone also includes the "shake and tilt" control feature which the original iClone didn't have. This allows you to advance the phone and change the image with a flick of your wrist. It's very intuitive and many people prefer this to having to scroll around.

Verizon and Sprint use the CDMA standard (Code Division Multiple Access), and AT&T (formerly Cingular Wireless) and T-Mobile employ the GSM standard (Global System Mobile), which currently enjoys about 73% world market share.

As with AT&T before Carterphone, all of the carriers sell their own phones, and block access to their networks from the others to varying degrees, using different methods. The CDMA phones use an Electronic Serial Number (ESN) that is registered by the carrier network. Verizon will not allow a phone on their network that is not sold by them. Sprint will allow you to register a non Sprint device, but strongly discourages it and offers no technical support for such phones.

GSM networks use a SIM card, a chip that contains subscriber information and is designed to allow phones to switch networks by inserting the SIM card of the appropriate carrier. Phones sold by AT&T and T-Mobile come with the SIM card disabled, effectively locking them to the network. It is possible, though not easy, to unlock these phones and is also legal to do so in the United States. Not wanting to push the envelope too much, AT&T and T-Mobile allow the unlocking of their phones after an initial period of ownership.

In an attempt to keep users on their networks, and thus revenues up, the cellcos have crippled applications that others enjoy world wide. The very popular activities of downloading music, pictures, and video are indeed available in the US cellular market, but try to email or upload to a location not approved, and you'll likely find your efforts blocked. You can, for an additional fee of course, upload and share your media to web sites approved by the carrier.

Bluetooth wireless technology lets devices communicate with each other over a low band short range radio frequency. Bluetooth enabled printers, computers, mobile phones and wireless headsets, allow users to up and download media, send files and photos to a printer, and talk on your cell phone hands free. Yet US carriers have at some time or another crippled many of the features available through Bluetooth technology.

Probably the most disruptive technology for the cellular industry is WiFi. The 802.11b/g standard allows for a broadband wireless connection suitable for email, web browsing, inter device communication, and the dreaded, extremely cheap, voice over Internet Protocol. Internet telephony can bypass the cellular networks by sending voice directly over the Internet through a landline or a WiFi connection.

Device manufacturers can and do incorporate WiFi technology into their handsets, but the cellular carriers in the US have resisted tooth and nail by crippling WiFi in their devices, and demanding that manufacturers make WiFi-less versions of their phones for the American market. While it is technologically possible to load third party applications such as Skype onto a mobile phone, to do so on a WiFi capable cell phone would threaten the very business model of the cellcos.

Today, you will find very few cell phones in America that are WiFi capable. Just now, cell phones are becoming available in Europe that can operate on the cellular network as well as corporate wireless LANs, integrating into the company IP/PBX telephony system.

In conjunction with AT&T, Apple announced recently that its premier iPhone coming out in June will have WiFi functionality, but to what extent is yet to be seen. Unfortunately for Skype and others, there will be no third party applications allowed on the iPhone.

The major carriers in the US also offer broadband Internet access over their networks, mainly through an antenna placed on a PC card plugged into a laptop. Cellular broadband access is in direct competition with the WiFi hotspots popping up in airports, hotels, corporate LANS, and other public facilities. The developing 802.16 WiMax technology also threatens to add the Metropolitan LAN into the competitive mix.

While WiFi is considerably faster than the cellular networks, it is mainly designed for short range networks and hot spots must be searched out. The cellular networks, on the other hand, can offer broadband access wherever their network reaches.

The U.S. carriers restrict what type of services, applications, and features are allowed on their network, and will terminate and charge users suspected of violating their contractual agreement. Basically, broadband services allow only email, browsing, and corporate intranet access. Downloading of music and video from unauthorized sites (iTunes and YouTube for example) and P2P file sharing is prohibited, and enforced in some cases by placing strict band width limitations on users.

How the Net Neutrality Movement Pertains to the Cellular Industry

If the early development of the Internet can be compared to the American Wild West, then the rise of the U.S. cellular industry can be likened to Stalin's Soviet Union. Carrier networks rule developers, device manufactures, and consumers with an iron fist, allowing only the services and features of their choice on their networks.

To be sure, there are some major differences between the Internet and cellular networks. U.S. carriers have spent billions for their share of the wireless spectrum, and maintain the right to determine what features are available to the consumer. Corporate executives contend that there is fierce competition in the cellular industry that should be the determining factor in consumer choice, as opposed to governmental regulation.

Whereas the early days of the Internet witnessed massive technological innovation from developers and manufacturers due to its inherent openness, American cellular networks were from the beginning proprietary and self serving.

The Net Neutrality concept sprung from a grass roots movement when cable and telco executives started talking about charging high bandwidth users such as Google, Vonage, and YouTube, for using their pipes. The fear that these companies could thus control what content would be available to consumers threatened the very foundation of a free and open Internet.

The cellular phone companies on the other hand, were from their inception businesses operating in a free enterprise society, and as such, have every right to dictate what services to offer. Absent any public outcry from consumers for the right to choose, regulation of the industry would seem to be anything but a foregone conclusion.

That said, the implementation of the Carterphone principals would seem to be a logical step to prevent monopoly like tactics from an industry that is entrusted with the public airwaves. The other players in the telecommunication industry, including the cable companies, must and do abide by the ruling.

What is puzzling is that cellular companies could actually open up more revenue streams by offering services that consumers would gladly pay extra for. Downloading music and video from iTunes for example could be charged by bandwidth usage, and cellcos could implement calling plans that would include minutes used to make calls over the Internet.

Of particular interest to the business community is the concept of Fixed Mobile Convergence, having one phone with one phone number that can traverse cellular and WiFi networks, allowing calls to be made through VoIP and traditional landlines, in addition to the cellular air waves.

Device manufacturers like Nokia already make handsets that integrate with corporate IP/PBX systems from Cisco, Avaya, Siemens and others, and will route calls over the best network available. While much progress in this technology is being made in Europe and other regions, the American market remains stifling for developers and manufacturers both.

It will be interesting to see how the Skype petition plays out with the FCC. Applying the Carterphone ruling could conceivably open up the floodgates for new development and technological innovation. If not, the U.S. cell phone industry will have to depend on sluggish market forces to catch up with the rest of the world.

And putting your DROID in the car dock in portrait mode overrides the widget, which is perfect.

CECT i68 (3G Style) - Does Such a Phone Exist? Details on the i9+

I've been getting a lot of inquiries about the new CECT 3G phone.  Someone wrote me yesterday wanting details and specs on the "3G style i68." I am pretty sure that the person was actually talking about the CECT i9+, which is sometimes called the CiPhone.  I'll outline some of the features of this new phone in the following article.

The Progression Of This Phone: I believe that the reader was actually asking about the SciPhone i68.  This was and still is a very popular phone. It was an upgrade of the original P168 iClone because it now included Java, was a quad band, and added the shake and tilt feature. Later, the SciPhone morphed into the CECT i9, which was a bit sleeker and faster and had dual sim active (which allowed both sim cards to be on line at once without having to switch back and forth between the two.) 

Now, this new CECT 3G is the latest progression in this series and is often called the i9+. 

How Is It Different? What Does The 3G Mean: The quick answer is that this is the 3rd generation of this phone.  But, that name has nothing to do with the network that the phone can be used on.  This new phone is similar to previous models in that it runs on GSM sim cards.  You can browse the net with the WAP browser or the Java Opera Mini browser over GPRS.  This is pretty fast, but it's not a 3G connection.

However, there are some notable upgrades and improvements in this third generation model.  It now offers many more icons on the welcome screen - over ten pages to be exact.  With the older i68 and 9, you were pretty limited to icons for SMS, calls, games, camera, tools, settings, documents, alarm, photo album, calendar, etc.

With the new phone, pretty much any tool or application has an icon.  This includes weather, stocks, You Tube, maps, Gmail or other emails applications, plus syncing, etc.  Another cool thing about the phone is that you can drag the icons around with your fingers to make sure that the apps that you use the most are represented on the first page.

Additionally, this new phone looks a bit different. The casing / housing is shiny, thicker and sleek.  In my opinion, it looks a bit like a lap top cover. You can now get it in white, red, or black.

Nothing has been taken away from the original design.  You still have your Java and it's still a quad band with shake and tilt.  It still offer dual sim active, as well as all of the other goodies (Bluetooth, MP3 / MP4, camera / web cam, etc.)  It still works on networks with sim cards like AT&T, T Mobile, and Fido (as well as pay as you go or pre paid cards.)  Although many have reported that the 3G sim cards work fine in the phone, you don't seem to get any additional speed, just what was there previously, which isn't too bad, especially if you have a compacted browser like Opera Mini.

Does the Mini CECT KA08 Have Wi-Fi? I'll Tell You

I received an email the other day in which the writer asked me if the "mini iPhone" (or the phone otherwise known as the CECT KA08) included Wi-Fi. The KA08 has many cool features, but generally speaking, Wi-Fi isn't one of them. There is a similar phone that does include Wi-Fi, but which of these works out to be a better phone for you depends on how you intend to use the features of each of the phones. I will discuss this more in the following article.

What The KA08 Does Have: Although this one can't connect via hot spots, it does have many other features which ensures that it's a brisk seller. It is a dual sim phone which is also a quad band. It does have WAP web browsing. It does allow for email as well as MMS and SMS messaging. It includes Bluetooth, FM radio, an MP3 / MP4 player, a digital camera / web cam, and an e-book reader. It also has the shake and tilt addition. One feature that is pretty unique to this phone is talking text. This little gadget will read your text messages to you in the language that you select.

Want This Phone With Wi-Fi? Check Out The F003: There is a similar phone that includes the usage of hotspots. Although it goes by a few different names, it's mostly known as the F003. The first thing that I have to get out of the way is that it's not quite as small as the KA. It's not exactly a fat or large phone, but it's not quite as "mini" as the K. However, it also includes Java support, which is also something that the K mini lacks. So, while you are losing some a bit of size and you don't have the talking text, you do now have Wi-Fi and Java as well as all of the other things that you have come to expect like web browsing, email, messaging, Bluetooth, media, photos, etc.

Speaking of photos, the F003 has a snazzier camera in that it has both rear and front lenses. It also has a built in television. I suppose the bottom line is if you are going to be using the Internet, texting, using the Java applications, or watching TV a lot, then the F003 might make a little more sense. However, if you are really after the small size and only that, the KA08 really is the smallest comparable model out there.

Night Vision WiFi Cameras - Extremely Useful And Versatile

The obvious uses of the camera include serving as a movable security camera, as part of a web conference system to allow the camera to be moved easily about a physical conference room to facilitate the view of people at other sites or even as a means of keeping an eye on something from far away, from the baby mentioned above to a display at a zoo or even a soft drink machine. These cameras can be used to watch outdoors pets at night, or farmers can use this system and a signal repeater to keep watch on barns or fields. For webconference use, this camera appears desirable due to the ease of moving around a conference room, allowing the users to switch from one location to another for the convenience of the off-site participants.

In theory, a user can even use this camera to create a home security system, not up to professional standards, but certainly capable of seeing what is stealing the dogfood or knocking over the trash cans at night. It might even be used to see how squirrels are breaking into the squirrel-proof bird feeders.

The Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) 802 Dot 11 Wireless Standard

Increasingly, people are connecting to the Internet using wireless connectivity. Commonly known as WiFi, (Wireless Fidelity), the technology can be found in many laptops, netbooks, cell phones and a host of other electronic gadgetry. The technology, known as the 802.11 standard in industrial circles, works in much the same way as cell phone technology, though the range that radio waves are transmitted is considerably smaller.

802.11 is applied as the standard by the Institute of Electronic Engineers, (IEEE), where 802 defines the standard itself, and 11 the working group within the IEEE assigned the workload. After this, letters are applied to each release, which relates to a task group working on enhancements. There are four main standards.

Firstly there is the 802.11a standard. Whilst use of the 5GHz frequency does allow for relatively high communication speeds, it does limit the range of transmission. It is a popular choice for larger organizations, with transfer of data being as high as 54Mbps.

Secondly there is the 802.11b standard. This uses the 2.4GHz frequency, which broadcasts over a greater range. The compromise to this is with the speed of communication, which is reduced significantly to 11Mbps. It is very popular with smaller businesses, individuals and particularly coffee stores offering free WiFi.

Thirdly there is the 802.11g standard which also transmits using the 2.4GHz frequency. However, this standard allows speeds of 54Mbps to be reached, having been enhanced using all that is the best in the standards and improvements going before it.

Fourthly there is the 802.11n standard. Amazingly, this has been in discussion for seven years, was only ratified recently, and the full list of enhancements only published in October of 2009. However, many users have been enjoying the increased speeds and range offered since early 2007.

Whilst speeds of 600Mbps have been touted, this has yet to be experienced in real time. More common, is something around the 100Mbps mark, though many people see 160Mbps easily achievable. All this is provided on the lower 2.4GHz frequency; and thus provides a considerable range of data transmission too. The standard is also backwards compatible; thus upgrades can be done progressively to help with costs, and the technology is said to be future proof.

As advised above, these are the four most commonly accepted standards, and those which many are familiar with despite not having a particularly sound knowledge of all things IT. There are others of course that take up the other suffixes not otherwise mentioned.

Rather than provide different ways of connecting and providing higher speeds however, these are more technical modifications to how the WiFi network works.

All the speeds listed next to each standard is the highest possible speed advertised; though these are very much only to be expected in ideal conditions. The time of day that the network used is key to the speed achieved; relying very much on how many people are online, and what data is being transferred at any one time.

802.11 WiFi standards will continue to grow and advance of course, and are there to ensure a uniformity of WiFi, to help both the industry, and the consumer.
