People love gaming on the iPhone. It really has become the next big thing, and the appstore is flooded with games. Some are expensive, some are cheap, and some are free. One thing is consistent though, and that is that most are not very good.
Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, and one of those exceptions is Uniwar. Uniwar is a turn-based, hex strategy game that is kind of a mix between Starcraft and Civilization. It is turn based like Civ, but the playable races in the game mirror Starcraft almost identically.
You have the Khraleans, which are insect creatures that specialize in mass production of cheaper, weaker units that can swarm the enemy. They are the Uniwar version of the Zerg.
Then you have the Titans, an advanced alien race with the most powerful units, but they are slow to move and expensive to build. They are the Uniwar version of the Protoss.
Lastly, you have the Sapiens. They are the humans, and offer a balance between the other two races. They have average powered units, with average movement, at average prices. They are the Uniwar version of the Terran, right down to the Marines and Siege Tanks.
Ok, so the races are like Starcraft, but does that make it good? Sure, that alone doesn't make a game good, but that's only the beginning. One of great things about Uniwar is that it doesn't waste your time focusing on building a bunch of building or mining a bunch of ore. Each map has bases scattered about it. To capture a base you simply land on it with your base unit and select capture. If he survives until the next turn, the base is yours, and you get resources just for owning it. This is also what you build your units out of.
The combat and terrain in Uniwar is very well designed, and much like Starcraft is very well balanced. There are a large variety of units, from land to air to sea, and a large variety of unit types from light units to heavy units to siege units, etc. The game really plays like a big chess match of war, and since you don't have to worry about base building, you can focus on that. The terrain also interacts with the game in very interesting ways.
The game includes a single player campaign, but the main draw of the game is that the online multiplayer. You can play through 3g or wifi, and the really cool part is that it is all turn based. You don't have to sit down and dedicate time to the game, as each player has a settable time limit on their turn (usually 24 hours). You play your turn and then turn the game back over to the other player, and go on about your day. When they complete their turn you get a push notification and an email to let you know. There's no rush, you play at your own pace and not having to dedicate a block of time to play is extremely convenient.
Of course, there are also a variety of gametypes from 1v1 to team play to free for alls.
The game is available on the iPhone for $0.99 and on Android for $4.99. Another cool feature is that the game is cross platform, meaning that iPhone users can play against Android users.
I give it a 5/5 as far as mobile gaming goes, and highly recommend it!
